Social care stories

Grant

When I had to leave my job as a postman after a knee and hip operation, I joined a nursing home as a carer. I worked with the nurses, learning about supporting different people’s needs and gaining new skills each day. And I studied Levels 2 and 3 in health and social care and Level 5 in Assistant practitioner. I’ve never worked anywhere like it, or had to do so much training before. I think I surprised my family and friends with how hard I worked and studied. But I’m now a qualified assistant practitioner, so I’m really proud of my achievements.

At school, I really enjoyed doing work experience in a nursing home. It set my mind on what I wanted to do. So, after school, I joined the home as an activities assistant. I’ve gained level 2 and 3 qualifications in health and social care. And now, I’m a deputy manager, working with a great team that feels more like a family. And I’m studying for a level 5 management in health and social care qualification. I never thought I’d take my career this far. But there are so many opportunities in care, you can always build a bigger and better future.

While I initially trained as a Nurse, I later found myself in London working in Finance and then Compliance. I didn’t get a huge amount of job satisfaction but I did learn a lot. After re-evaluating my personal goals and my skills set, I decided to buy my first nursing home and the rest is history. By working in social care, I now experience job satisfaction every day through the wonderful close, meaningful and rewarding relationships with inspirational colleagues and with those who choose to live in my care homes. It feels like a family where we laugh, cry and have fun together – as well as work! There are few jobs around that offer that!
